Dancing has saved me in the sense that it has given me the ability to praise myself and have confidence in my trans body through the joy of movement.
Trans Dance Revolution is a weekly trans-centric street dance jam that was born out of my love for this feeling, as well as the culture and community that surrounds the street dance space.
It is this feeling, sense of community, and infectious confidence that I want to share with my trans peers. It is this feeling that I believe will uplift us not only in our personal lives, but also make our existence more seen within wider communities.
This is especially true in not only the street dance community, where trans people have historically been the pioneers of some street styles, but also in the wider political climate where now more than ever we must stand strong.
Dance has always been political in being intertwined with the struggles of oppressed peoples. We live in a time where the cultures of dance and their peoples have been appropriated on mass and exploited for the sake of capital.
Hence, it is more important than ever that we understand, respect, and interact with such culture with humility rather than just blind consumption. We all bleed under capitalism so it is imperative we recognise that no one is free until we are all free.
